March 7th at 7 AM @ the UTMB Field house pool: 215 Holiday Dr. Galveston, TX 77550 if you make the qualifications for the tryout the rookie school class for March will be the 7th-15th from 8 AM-6 PM @ Stewart Beach Pavilion!
March 14th at 7 AM @ the UTMB Field house pool: 215 Holiday Dr. Galveston, TX 77550 if you make the qualifications for the tryout the rookie school class for March will be the 14th-22nd from 8 AM-6 PM @ Stewart Beach Pavilion!
May 9th at 7 AM @ the UTMB Field house pool: 215 Holiday Dr. Galveston, TX 77550 if you make the qualifications for the tryout the rookie school class for May will be the 9th-22nd. The times will be May 9th 7am-8pm, May 10th, 16th, 17th 8am-8pm and May 11th-15th and 18th-22nd 4pm-10pm @ Stewart Beach Pavilion!
June 15th at 7 AM @ the UTMB Field house pool: 215 Holiday Dr. Galveston, TX 77550 if you make the qualifications for the tryout the rookie school class for June will be the 15th-23rd from 8 AM-6 PM @ Stewart Beach Pavilion!

Conditions of Employment
Lifeguards will be scheduled according to their availability, but are expected to work full-time, especially weekends and holidays, throughout the summer. Beach lifeguarding is very physically demanding and guards are expected to maintain adequate levels of fitness at all times.
- Lifeguard 1 – $12.45
- Lifeguard 2 – $13.29
- Lifeguard 3- $14.35
- Senior Guard- $16.36
- Supervisor – $19.13

Completed applications and a physician signed copy of the Physical Waiver Form need to be brought to tryouts.
Tryouts and Interview Dates
Applicants will come to one of three Tryout Dates with a completed Application and Physical Examination Letter (signed by a physician). At the tryout, applicants will have to swim 500 meters in 10 minutes or less in the UTMB Field House pool. Everyone who passes the swim will participate in an interview. Tryout and interview participants are generally finished by 1:00 PM. Once the applicant passes these two steps, they will be invited to participate in the Run-Swim-Run held at Stewart Beach. Once the Run-Swim-Run is successfully completed the applicant must pass a urine drug screen. Applicants who meet all the above qualification will be allowed to join the Lifeguard Training Academy starting immediately after the drug screen.
Each year, the Galveston Island Beach Patrol trains a group of Lifeguard Candidates, or “Rookies”, in a rigorous Lifeguard Training Academy. The Academy includes United States Lifesaving Association Open Water accreditation, along with an option for American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification. Lifesaving skills are learned in a pool environment and perfected in the open water of the Gulf of Mexico.
The course consists of 100 hours of training including American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response and CPR for the Professional Rescuer, United States Lifesaving Association Open Water Lifeguard Training, tourist relations training, and physical training. Lifeguard candidates will be paid a training wage for the time they spend on the training course. Upon successful completion of the Lifeguard Academy, candidates will be promoted to Lifeguard 1 status and will be eligible to work for Galveston Island Beach Patrol.
Bring Driver’s License and Social Security Card to the first day of the Lifeguard Training Academy, or you will not be allowed to attend!
