Important Information

  • Tryouts will be held @ UTMB Field House Pool: 301 Holiday Dr., Galveston, TX 77550
  • Requirements to advance to the Lifeguard Academy:
    *Swim 500 meters less than 10minutes, must have completed application, pass background/drug screen, and physical*
  • Finish the run/swim/run/swim/run
  • Lifeguard Academy begins immediately following the tryout.  The Lifeguard Academy can last 8-12 hours per day
  • Location: Stewart Beach – Galveston, TX 77550
  • Please bring food, drinks, swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, and change of clothes.

  • Must be 16 or older
  • Pass UDS (urine test)
  • Pass Background Check
  • Pass the Lifeguard Training Academy

Conditions of Employment

Lifeguards will be scheduled according to their availability, but are expected to work full-time.  We expect all Lifeguards to work weekends and holidays, throughout the summer. Beach lifeguarding is physically demanding therefore; Lifeguards are expected to maintain adequate levels of fitness and attend mandatory trainings.

Tryout Information

The following is required to tryout:  Application to be completed in ADVANCE, present your physical the day of, and bring an acceptable I-9 document Click Here for more information on I-9 documents.  You will be required to swim 500 meters in 10 minutes or less in the UTMB Field House pool located at:  301 Holiday Drive, Galveston, TX 77550 to advance to the Lifeguard Academy.  The Lifeguard Academy begins immediately following the tryout.  The Lifeguard Academy can run 8-12 hours per day.  Please come prepared with food, drinks, sunscreen, swimsuit, change of clothes, towel, etc..

Lifeguard Academy

Each year, the Galveston Island Beach Patrol trains a group of Lifeguard Candidates, or “Rookies”, in a rigorous Lifeguard Training Academy. The Academy includes United States Lifesaving Association Open Water accreditation, along with an option for American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification. Lifesaving skills are learned in a pool environment and perfected in the open water of the Gulf of Mexico.

The course consists of 100 hours of training including American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, United States Lifesaving Association Open Water Lifeguard Training, tourist relations training, and physical training. Lifeguard candidates will be paid a training wage for the time they spend on the training course. Upon successful completion of the Lifeguard Academy, candidates will be promoted to Lifeguard 1 status and will be eligible to work for Galveston Island Beach Patrol.
