Each year, the Galveston Island Beach Patrol trains a group of Lifeguard Candidates, or “Rookies”, in a rigorous Lifeguard Training Academy. The Academy includes United States Lifesaving Association Open Water accreditation, along with an option for American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification. Lifesaving skills are learned in a pool environment and perfected in the open water of the Gulf of Mexico.
Another major component is American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response certification, and CPR/AED training for the professional rescuer. In the midst of all this classroom training, the rookies also take part in daily workouts and beach training exercises to ensure they are in top physical condition by Memorial Day Weekend.
